Tawang: The second edition of the International Tawang Marathon was held on Thursday in the picturesque high-altitude town of Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang, coinciding with United Nations Day.
Jointly organized by the Arunachal Pradesh government and the Indian Army, this year’s marathon attracted a record-breaking 4,580 participants, including 1,199 women, from across India and two foreign nations.
A remarkable highlight was the participation of an 80-year-old runner from Mumbai, demonstrating the event’s appeal to people of all ages.
The marathon was graced by the presence of Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Pema Khandu and the General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps, who joined the runners, symbolizing the spirit of unity and collaboration.
Set against the majestic backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas, the marathon presented a challenging course, testing the endurance of participants as they navigated steep inclines and descents.
The breathtaking pristine landscape of Tawang along the route, however, made the journey truly unforgettable.
Beyond the race, the Tawang Marathon provided a significant economic boost to the region.
The influx of thousands of participants and visitors positively impacted local businesses, particularly in tourism and hospitality. The event showcased Tawang’s potential as a world-class adventure tourism destination and offered visitors a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Monpa community.
The marathon also strengthened ties among the local population, the Indian Army, and the government, reinforcing the deep bond shared among them.
