Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik on Monday stressed the need for a holistic approach to tackle security challenges in the Northeast, underscoring the importance of public trust, minimising civilian casualties, and upholding human rights.

Speaking at a seminar on Northeast India’s military history held at Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), Parnaik highlighted the long-term impact of neglect in the region, which had fuelled insurgency over the years.

He emphasised that addressing these challenges requires collaboration and a focus on sustainable peacebuilding.

The seminar, organised by RGU’s history department, examined the evolution of the Northeast, particularly in the post-independence period.

Parnaik noted that British colonial policies and military strategies in the region had diverged significantly from those implemented in other parts of India, leaving a lasting influence on the area’s sociopolitical landscape.

As the chief rector of the university, the governor lauded RGU Vice-Chancellor Prof. S K Nayak and the organising team for their efforts in fostering academic discussions on such a critical subject.

Encouraging young researchers, Parnaik urged scholars to delve into doctoral studies in military history, suggesting that fresh perspectives could contribute to national security and integration strategies.

Former North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) professor Imdad Hussain delivered the keynote address, offering valuable insights into the region’s unique military and historical context.

Faculty members from RGU’s history department also shared their perspectives during the event.

The seminar attracted vibrant participation from students and research scholars across universities in the Northeast.

A total of 13 research papers were presented, reflecting diverse viewpoints and fostering meaningful discussions on the region’s historical and security dynamics.

Parnaik’s address underscored the importance of understanding the region’s history to inform future policies and ensure sustainable development while addressing security concerns in the Northeast.
