Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Sunday paid homage to Indian Army soldiers who fought and fell during the 1962 India-China war, at the historic Helmet Post war memorial in Anjaw district near Walong.
In his tribute shared on social media, Khandu said he was deeply moved to bow before the courage of the troops who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending the nation’s borders more than six decades ago.
The chief minister recalled the origins of the memorial, noting its emotional significance.
In December 1986, the Border Roads Organisation discovered the remains of a soldier alongside 24 helmets fixed on wooden pickets.
The discovery transformed the site into a sacred reminder of the men who gave their lives in the Battle of Walong, earning it the name “Helmet Post.”
Khandu also paid special respect to Lieutenant Bikram Singh of the 6 Kumaon Regiment, describing him as an “unsung hero” of the battle.
He emphasised that Helmet Post is not merely a monument but a living chronicle of courage, resilience, and sacrifice, standing testimony to the indomitable spirit of Indian soldiers.
The Battle of Walong, fought between October 22 and November 16, 1962, remains one of the fiercest engagements of the war.
Despite being outnumbered and facing daunting odds, soldiers of the 11 Infantry Brigade, supported by regiments including 6 Kumaon and 4 Dogra, resisted the Chinese advance with exceptional bravery.

Military historians often highlight Walong as a rare theatre of the conflict where Indian troops not only held ground but also launched determined counter-attacks, leaving behind a legacy of extraordinary gallantry.
An Army official said the Helmet Post memorial today continues to draw visitors, military personnel, and historians who come to honour those who laid down their lives in defence of the country.
Reflecting on the enduring relevance of the site, Khandu said the sacrifices made on this frontier highlight Arunachal Pradesh’s pivotal role as the nation’s first line of defence.
“The valour shown by our soldiers at Walong will always inspire generations. Preserving their legacy with pride and patriotism is our solemn duty,” he said.
