ITANAGAR: The Indian Armed Forces, Tawang administration, and the local community came together to mark the 74th Maj Bob Khathing Day at the Tawang War Memorial Complex on Wednesday.

The celebrations, held amidst the picturesque backdrop of the border town, witnessed the participation of military officers from the Tawang Brigade, senior officials from the state administration, students, community leaders, Army veterans, and monks.

The atmosphere was infused with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm as attendees paid tribute to the valiant spirit of Major Bob Khathing.

The proceedings commenced with a wreath-laying ceremony, a solemn tribute to the sacrifices made by Major Khathing and his comrades.

The unfurling of the Tricolour, symbolising the spirit of unity and sovereignty, followed.

Students and local artists added to the cultural tapestry of the event with captivating performances, showcasing the rich heritage and diversity of the region.

Major Khathing, a revered figure in the annals of Indian history, was entrusted with the monumental task of establishing Indian administration in the remote Tawang region following India’s independence.

It was on February 14, 1951, that the Tricolour was hoisted for the first time at Tawang by Major Khathing, marking the formal establishment of Indian administration in the region.

Undaunted by the formidable challenges posed by the rugged Himalayan terrain, Major Khathing embarked on a perilous march from the plains of Assam to Tawang, navigating treacherous passes and leading a contingent of 200 Assam Rifles troops and 600 porters.

His strategic vision and diplomatic finesse enabled him to bridge divides and foster trust among the local populace, seamlessly integrating Tawang into the Indian Union.

Major Khathing’s unwavering resolve and commitment to unity laid the foundations for governance and development in Tawang, leaving behind a legacy of peace and nation-building.

The annual celebration of Major Bob Khathing Day serves as a poignant reminder of his remarkable achievements and enduring legacy.
