Itanagar: Altogether 89 bird species were documented during a two-day bird watch survey at a lake in Arunachal Pradesh’s Namsai district.

The Arunachal Pradesh Birding Club (APBC), in collaboration with the Public Works Department, Namsai Division, conducted a two-day bird watch survey at the Nongsaya Lake and Jona forest sections of Namsai district.

The bird watch survey was led by APBC President and State Green Guardian awardee Koj Mama, along with many avid and enthusiastic bird and nature lovers.

“The survey was undertaken recognising the critical ecological role the lake plays,” conservationist Koj Mama said.

Nongsaya Lake, located around 9 km from Namsai town, is surrounded by lush green forests and holds tremendous potential as a habitat for migratory water birds.

Its surrounding environment holds immense potential for conserving birds and butterflies, while also offering a natural space for environmental education and recreation.

Mama added that the lake could significantly contribute to sustainable development and community involvement in ecosystem protection.

With proper infrastructure and thoughtfully designed trekking routes, the lake and its surrounding forests have the potential to become a global bird-watching destination, added Mama.

During the bird watch survey, 89 different bird species were recorded in the lake, which included the Oriental Darter and Lesser Adjutant, the Pale-chinned Blue Flycatcher, Blossom-headed Parakeet, Yellow-bellied Warbler, and Chestnut-capped Babbler in the forests.

The researchers also documented several butterfly species, including the rare Assam Pasa, highlighting the region’s ecological diversity.

He stated, “With proper development, the lake could attract ecotourism, boost local livelihoods, and support environmental preservation projects.”

He added that the lake serves multiple purposes, including conservation, sustainable fishing, recreation, and acting as a migratory bird sanctuary.

“Developing Nongsaya Lake into a green, biodiversity-rich region could significantly boost Namsai’s environmental and economic sustainability,” stated the APBC president.
