ITANAGAR: The picturesque village of Bongleng, nestled near the Indo-Bhutan border in Arunachal Pradesh, came alive as the Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship 2024 was officially inaugurated on Wednesday.
The event, graced by Tawang’s Deputy Commissioner, Kanki Darang, signals the beginning of a thrilling three-day extravaganza set to put Arunachal Pradesh on the global kayaking map.
With 51 kayakers hailing from across the globe, including nations such as Britain, Russia, and Australia, as well as participants from various Indian states, the championship promises a spectacle of diverse cultures and kayaking expertise.
Race Director Charanjeev Kala expressed aspirations of hosting future World Championships, envisioning the Northeastern state at the forefront of the global kayaking scene.

“The aim is twofold – establish Arunachal Pradesh as a global kayaking hub, aspiring to host World Championships, bolstered by Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s patronage,” he told the press.
Amidst the challenging waters of Tawang, participants unite in their passion for kayaking, showcasing the universal appeal of the sport.

Organised by SWITCH, the event marks the first step towards positioning Arunachal Pradesh as a premier destination for kayaking enthusiasts worldwide.
The championship enjoys staunch support from Chief Minister Pema Khandu and the endorsement of Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Riiju, adding prestige and governmental commitment to Arunachal Pradesh’s sporting ambitions.
As the championship races unfold, culminating on February 9, anticipation builds for the crowning of the champion kayakers based on their exceptional performances throughout the event.
