Itanagar: In a major breakthrough, Arunachal Pradesh Police have recovered 15 vehicles that were fraudulently sold in the state after being stolen from neighbouring Assam.
The vehicles were traced to Naharlagun in the Itanagar Capital Region following a coordinated investigation.
Police said the cars were part of a larger racket involving 40 vehicles hired from Assam by a 38-year-old Guwahati resident, Rupjyoti Das, who allegedly sold them to unsuspecting buyers in Arunachal Pradesh on the promise that legal documents would be provided later.
Das is currently in the custody of Naharlagun Police.
According to Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega, the accused had rented a total of 71 vehicles from different owners in Assam and even paid a few months’ rent to build credibility before cheating them.

To deceive buyers, he allegedly posed as a senior bank official and claimed that the vehicles were part of genuine bank e-auctions.
The recovered vehicles have been handed over to Assam Police for completion of legal formalities and return to their rightful owners.
Police said further investigation is underway to recover more vehicles and identify additional victims connected to the fraud.
Authorities have also urged the public to exercise caution while purchasing vehicles and to verify documents with transport departments, banks and police authorities before making any financial transactions.
