Guwahati: The first day of the winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday witnessed hue and cry over the rising graph of crime against women.
Debabrata Saikia, leader of the opposition, citing National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, wanted to know the steps taken by the Assam government to contain crime against women.
Ajanta Neog, the Women and Child Development minister said checking crime against women is a collective responsibility of everyone.
“We have prepared a Standard Operating Procedure on the issue and it was notified on November 16,” she said, adding that the SOP was prepared in consultation with the home, health and legal departments.
Neog claimed incidents of crime against women have almost halved in 2022 and it will be reflected in the next NCRB data. She also said that reporting of crime has increased due to rising awareness among women.
“Women now come forward to register cases,” she said.
Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi started making hue and cry over the issue of crime against women. He said Assam topped the list of crime against women in India.
“PM had promised to make Assam number one. So did the CM. Is this the number one that we have been aspiring to be? The law and order situation in Assam is a total failure,” he alleged.
Speaker Biswajit Daimary repeatedly instructed Akhil Gogoi to ask his supplementary question and abstain from delivering a speech.
Members of the treasury bench started shouting at Gogoi, and it led to a noisy scene as some of the Congress members also joined the hullabaloo in support of the opposition MLA.
