Shillong: Meghalaya Government is all set to put up 300 cameras equipped with facial recognition technology to avert crime, including arson, across Shillong.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the facial technology cameras are being installed so that it serves as a deterrent to lawbreakers.

Sangma claimed by the end of July, the work of installation of the facial recognition cameras will be complete.

The state government has earmarked ₹150 crore under the Smart City project for the establishment of the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC), Sangma said.

In the wake of a series of petrol bomb attacks on vehicles in several parts of Shillong over the past few days, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma assured the people that the situation would be brought under control soon.

Sangma claimed the state government is doing everything in its capacity to ensure that such incidents don’t happen in future.

“Work is already underway to put up the cameras at various junctions,” he said.

Sangma said presence of these cameras would serve as a strong deterrent. He said with the expansion of the camera network, people would become increasingly aware of being under surveillance.

The Chief Minister said his government is committed to ensure peace and tranquility in the state, and would not tolerate any attempt to jeopardize lives and properties of the citizens.

Sangma also asked the state police department to increase vigil, especially in some of the pockets across Shillong so that the criminals don’t get to evade arrests after committing the crime.

The cameras will also help the traffic police in maintaining discipline on the busy roads in Shillong.
