AIZAWL: The allure of Mizoram’s picturesque landscapes and vibrant culture drew over 1,96,000 tourists, including foreigners, to the state in the year 2023, state Tourism department’s data has revealed.

According to a statement released by the department on Monday, a total of 1,96,880 tourists explored the state last year, with 1,93,445 being domestic travellers and 3,435 hailing from foreign shores.

Leading the pack of foreign visitors were Americans, with 1,162 tourists from the United States followed by Japan, Australia, Israel, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Comparatively, the tourist footfall in 2022-23 slightly decreased to over 2.22 lakh, with 2.18 lakh being domestic tourists and 3,551 foreigners.

This decline is attributed to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mizoram’s proactive approach to tourism through its “responsible” tourism policy has played a pivotal role in attracting visitors.

Envisioned as a sustainable development strategy, the policy stresses on coordination, strengthening institutional frameworks, and skill development in the tourism sector.

It also aims to leverage tourism for the development of villages and local communities, thereby uplifting livelihoods and promoting economic, social, and environmental responsibilities.

One key aspect of this policy is the exemption of foreigners from obtaining Protected Area Permit (PAP) from the Union Home Ministry, making it easier for them to explore the state’s wonders.

Despite the suspension of PAP by the Home Ministry for all foreigners except those from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China.

However, every foreign tourist is required to report to the Foreigner Registration Office in Aizawl within 24 hours of arrival in Mizoram.

Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, including rolling hills, serene valleys, and cascading waterfalls, Mizoram offers a myriad of attractions for visitors.

Additionally, Mizo heritage villages in Falkawn and Reiek provide insights into the rich cultural heritage and lifestyle of the Mizo people, further enriching the tourist experience in Mizoram.
