AIZAWL: A devastating thunderstorm has ravaged Mizoram over the past three days, leaving a trail of destruction that includes over 2,500 damaged structures and a tragic loss of life.
Reportedly, the onslaught of powerful storms, accompanied by hail and heavy rainfall, battered various regions of Mizoram till Wednesday, causing widespread havoc across the state, authorities reported.
Tragically, amidst the chaos, a 45-year-old woman lost her life when a tree, uprooted by ferocious winds, fell upon her on April 1, officials have confirmed to the press.
The aftermath of the calamity reveals a grim picture, with damage extending to residential homes, educational institutions, and vital government infrastructure.
According to officials from the State’s Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, the toll includes 15 churches across five districts, 17 schools, 11 relief camps in Champhai and Saitual districts, catering to Myanmar refugees and internally displaced people from Manipur.
About 11 Anganwadi centres in Kolasib and Serchhip districts, among numerous government buildings, too have been ravaged by the thunderstorm.
Kolasib district in North Mizoram bore the brunt of the devastation, with over 800 structures, including dwellings, schools, churches, Anganwadi centres, and staff quarters, reported as severely affected.
Aizawl district also suffered significant damage, with 632 dwelling houses impacted by the calamity.
Expressing profound sorrow for the affected, K Sapdanga, Minister for Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, has assured assistance.
Despite the election Model Code of Conduct being in effect, the government pledged support in the form of monetary aid or essential materials, within the purview of existing laws.
Efforts are underway to seek permission from the Election Commission of India for necessary relief measures.
Reportedly, Chief Minister Lalduhoma has personally apprised the Central Election Commission of the dire situation, stressing on the urgent need for assistance to the affected families.
