Guwahati: Six traditional products and crafts of Assam, including the Bihu Dhol, Jaapi and Sarthebari bell metal craft, have been accorded the Geographical Indication (GI) tags.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday made the announcement about the six prestigious GI Tags being granted to the traditional crafts of the state.
Terming it a big win for Assam’s heritage, Himanta Biswa Sarma said it was possible for the state to get six GI tags registered because of active support by NABARD and GI expert Rajani Kant.
The products which got the GI tag are the Assamese Jaapi, Bihu Dhol, Asharikandi Terracotta Craft, Panimateka (water hyacinth) Craft, Sarthebari Metal Craft and Mising Handloom Products.
The applications for the GI tags for these products were filed in October 2022 and the certifications were confirmed on Saturday, official source said.
People are quite euphoric with the announcement because the Bihu dhol and japi have been accorded the GI tags ahead of the Rongali Bihu festival.
The traditional Majuli mask and Majuli manuscript painting were given Geographical Indication (GI) tag on March 4.
