KOHIMA: Amidst heightened tensions and a declared “public emergency” in Eastern Nagaland, the Eastern Nagaland Students’ Federation (ENSF) has called for an urgent 24th Federal Assembly meeting on Tuesday at the ENSF office in Tuensang.

The directive from ENSF mandates the attendance of all federating units and the Eastern Nagaland Sumi Students’ Union to deliberate on the ongoing crisis due to Centre’s alleged delay in creating Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT).

Addressing the urgency of the situation, ENSF speakers Pho-e Konyak and assembly secretary L Kiukhum highlighted the critical nature of the meeting to address Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization’s (ENPO) endorsement and to strategise vigilance during the current crisis.

The assembly has further mandated the presence of key officials, including speakers/chairmen, presidents, general secretaries, two executives each, and members of the ENSF advisory board, from federating units and the ENSSU.

This assembly follows a total shutdown that gripped six districts of Eastern Nagaland – Mon, Tuensang, Noklak, Kiphire, Shamator, and Longleng – initiated by the ENPO on Monday.

Despite the disruption to daily life, no untoward incidents were reported during the bandh period.

The ENPO’s total shutdown is part of a larger call for a “Frontier Nagaland Territory,” a demand that has seen prolonged delays from the Centre in its realisation.

This demand, coupled with the call for a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS), has prompted the ENPO to take drastic measures to push for resolution.

A resolution adopted by ENPO on February 23 underscores their commitment to boycotting central and state elections until the government addresses the longstanding demand for the creation of the FNT.

In a bid to enforce this public emergency, the ENPO has also prohibited election campaigns by any political party within Eastern Nagaland during this period.

Prior to the assembly, mass rallies reverberated across all seven districts and ADC headquarters within Eastern Nagaland on February 9, amplifying the call for the creation of the FNT and the signing of a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS).
