GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a new spell of showers, potentially marking the first significant rain event for the Northeast this month.

The IMD reports the presence of a western disturbance near Pakistan, coupled with another trough stretching from Vidarbha to Odisha. This weather phenomenon is expected to bring rain to Northeastern states.

In its forecast, the IMD predicts isolated to scattered, light or moderate rainfall (or snowfall in higher altitudes) in parts of Arunachal Pradesh until Sunday, March 17.

Additionally, sections of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may experience light rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday, March 13-14.

Specifically, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh is anticipated to witness light rain from Wednesday to Friday, March 13-15.

However, Guwahati in Assam may not see any precipitation this week, despite hazy and partly cloudy skies.

Shillong in Meghalaya is likely to experience showers towards the end of the week, from March 15-17.

In contrast, Manipur’s Imphal and Nagaland’s Kohima districts are expected to encounter similar precipitation only on Friday, March 15.

Most parts of Mizoram will see intermittent rain or thundershowers from Friday to Sunday, March 15-17.

While February brought some relief in terms of rainfall for the Northeast, March has been relatively dry.

Between March 1 and 10, Arunachal received only 17 mm of rain (62% below normal), while Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim recorded significantly below-normal precipitation levels.
