GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) organised a mass bike rally in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) across the state on Thursday.

Hundreds of AASU members participated in protest bike rallies, demanding the repeal of the contentious Act in Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, and several other districts of the state.

A heavy deployment of security forces was also reported in these areas on March 7 to prevent any untoward incidents.

Earlier this month, the student body, in collaboration with 30 tribal organisations, announced a series of demonstrations opposing the Centre’s plan to enforce the CAA ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

A 12-hour hunger strike is scheduled to take place at each district headquarters from 6 am to 6 pm on March 10, symbolising the stance against the CAA.

Previously scheduled to happen on March 9, the date for the hunger strike was postponed by a day as a mark of deference to the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union and the Tai Ahom Youth Council’s request to commemorate the unveiling of the highest statue of Lachit Borphukan in Jorhat on Saturday.

According to the outlined schedule, AASU is poised to initiate the resistance with demonstrations, including the symbolic burning of copies of the CAA rules and paying homage to the five martyrs on March 8, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to the state.

The other organisations part of the forum include Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Asom Jatiya Aikya Mancha, Krishak-Shramik Unnayan Samiti, Anusuchita Jati Yuva-Chatra Parishad, Asom, Lachit Xena, Thalgiri, Bodo-Kachari Jatiya Parishad, Deori Justice Forum, Ekotrito Yuva Parishad, Asom Naba Nirman Mancha, Bhomi Adhikar Sangram Samiti, and Moria Yuva-Chatra Santha.

Meanwhile, renowned Assamese artist Zubeen Garg, during his performance at a cultural event in Baksa, Assam, strongly urged people to protest against the CAA. He deemed the act unnecessary and rallied attendees to stand against it. Garg vehemently declared that as long as he remains active, the CAA will not be implemented.
