SHILLONG: Issuing a stark warning about the mounting drug crisis gripping Meghalaya, Director General of Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi said that a troubling 10% of drug traffickers in Meghalaya are women.
Addressing a press meet at Police Headquarters Shillong on Tuesday, the DGP said that Meghalaya Police have seized drugs worth over Rs 250 crore and arrested 610 drug traffickers since 2022.
“Of this, we arrested 355 individuals in 2023 and 25 in 2024 so far,” he said.
Bishnoi further informed that 116 drug-related cases were registered in 2022, another 189 in 2023 and 13 in the first two months of 2024, he added.

In response to this burgeoning threat, Meghalaya Police have implemented various strategies, including extensive awareness campaigns in educational institutions and relentless crackdowns on drug traffickers.
DGP Bishnoi noted that a concerning trend involves the involvement of repeat offenders and members of interstate criminal syndicates in drug trafficking activities.
Substantiating on the Meghalaya police’s analysis of the recent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act (NDPS) data in the state, Bishnoi informed that the recovery of narcotic drugs and arrest of drug traffickers in 2022 were under 28 police stations and that number has risen to 32 in 2024.
Prior to the interaction with the press, DGP Bishnoi also felicitated officers of Ri Bhoi police involved in the Rs 20-crore drug bust on March 4.
Terming them “rockstars,” he commended their dedication in the fight against the drug menace in Meghalaya. “This instant recognition is sure to inspire our men to excel!” he shared on a micro-blogging platform.
