GUWAHATI: As the political landscape heats up in Assam ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gears up with a prepared list of candidates set to undergo a rigorous discussion today in New Delhi, announced Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday.
The final list of candidates will be curated during the party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting scheduled for 9 pm today, with a dedicated 3-member panel assigned to each constituency to oversee the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
With the BJP eyeing a significant victory in the state, they have allocated 11 out of the 14 seats in Assam for their candidates, reserving two seats for their allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and one for the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) in Kokrajhar.
Exuding confidence in the party’s prospects, Chief Minister Sarma expressed assurance in securing a decisive win in 11 constituencies while striving to clinch the 12th seat as well.
“We are confident of a resounding victory in 11 constituencies, with our sights set on the 12th seat. The people’s trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains unwavering,” Sarma reiterated.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister of Assam and current Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, has announced his intent to contest from the Dibrugarh constituency.
While the formal announcement is slated for tomorrow, March 1, reports of Sonowal’s candidacy adds another layer of intrigue to the political discourse in Assam.
The political pulse was further heightened with a significant meeting between Chief Minister Sarma, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President JP Nadda on Thursday, signalling strategic discussions and alignments ahead of the electoral battle.
