GUWAHATI: A one-day workshop on avian research was recently organised by the Centre for Wildlife Research & Biodiversity Conservation (CWRBC) at Bodoland University.

Held in the lecture hall of the university, the workshop aimed to enhance understanding and research opportunities in the field of avian biodiversity.

The workshop attracted forty-five participants from institutions including Gauhati University, Science College, Kokrajhar, and Bodoland University, comprising students, research scholars, and teaching faculties.

The inaugural session was anchored by Eliza Basuamatry, a PhD scholar, who welcomed the attendees and set the tone for the event.

Prof. Hilloljyoti Singha, Director of CWRBC, highlighted the objectives of the centre, which included organising workshops and introducing skill development courses such as the Certificate Course on Wildlife Tourism and Post Graduate Diploma in Wildlife Science.

The workshop featured Dr Asad Rafi Rahmani, former Director of the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and a renowned ornithologist, as the sole resource person.

Dr Rahmani, known for his extensive research and publications, shared insights into avian biodiversity in India, bird identification techniques, case studies, and potential research topics in Assam.

Dr Rahmani also delivered a talk on “Counting Birds: Generational Amnesia”, which sparked engaging discussions among attendees.

Additionally, he addressed emerging threats to Indian birds, including challenges faced by migratory species.

During the session, various dignitaries expressed their appreciation for the initiative. Prof. Pradip Patra, Vice Chancellor in charge, commended the efforts of the centre and the Department of Zoology for organising the workshop.

Dr Shubong Basumatary, academic registrar, shared his concerns about the decline of bird species and encouraged participants to make the most of the workshop.

In a nutshell, the one-day workshop provided a platform for knowledge exchange and skill development in the field of avian research, contributing to the advancement of wildlife conservation efforts in the region.
