Nxtra by Airtel, a prominent player in India’s data centre industry, has entered into an agreement with Ampln and Amplus Energy to procure an additional 140,208 MWh of renewable energy.
This move aims at reducing Nxtra’s carbon footprint through renewable energy sources, slashing approximately 99,547 tCO2e annually.
Under the agreement, AmpIn Energy and Amplus Energy will establish captive solar and wind power plants, totaling 48 MWdc and 24.3 MW respectively, to cater to Nxtra’s data centres in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha.
These 25-year agreements align with Nxtra’s ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2031 and reinforce its position as India’s largest chain of green data centres.
In addition to these initiatives, Nxtra is implementing various interventions to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions across its operations by 100% by FY2031.
This includes accelerating the adoption of green energy, implementing energy-efficient infrastructure and processes, and embracing sustainable business practices.
Commenting on the partnerships, Ashish Arora, CEO of Nxtra by Airtel, highlighted the company’s commitment to leading India’s green data centre space.
“The additional clean energy supply would elevate the renewable energy share to approximately 70% in the overall energy mix for Nxtra’s core data centres,” he said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
The details of the agreement include setting up power plants in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha, with projected annual carbon reductions of approximately 77,957 tCO2e, 12,694 tCO2e, and 8,896 tCO2e, respectively.
Nxtra by Airtel boasts the largest network of data centres in India, comprising 12 large and 120 edge data centres nationwide.
The company is poised to invest over Rs 5000 crores in the coming years to build six new hyperscale data centres in key metro cities, thereby doubling its capacity to over 400 MW.
