The Buckingham Palace has revealed that King Charles, 75, has been diagnosed with cancer.
The Palace stated that the monarch is currently undergoing treatment, which will temporarily restrict his public appearances.
The specific type of cancer has not been disclosed, though it has been clarified that it is not prostate cancer.
The revelation came to light during routine treatment for a benign enlarged prostate at the London Clinic.
Despite the challenging diagnosis, Buckingham Palace stressed that King Charles remains optimistic and positive about his treatment.
“During the king’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. His majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” s statement issued by Buckingham Palace read.
The King, known for his dedication to his role, has already commenced regular outpatient treatments while continuing his constitutional duties as the head of state.
The royal family, including Prince Charles and Prince Harry, were personally informed of the diagnosis.
Prince Harry is expected to travel to the UK in the coming days to be with his father, leaving Meghan and their two children in the US.
The announcement prompted an outpouring of well-wishes from various quarters.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed optimism, saying, “Wishing his majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time, and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”
Even across the Atlantic, US President Joe Biden conveyed his concerns, expressing plans to call King Charles and stating, “I’m concerned about him. Just heard about his diagnosis. I’ll be talking to him, God willing.”
Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf extended thoughts and prayers, hoping for the king’s speedy recovery and return to public life while also acknowledging the challenging time for Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the royal family.
