GUWAHATI: In a significant feat, a shipment of 5000 Assam lemons (kaji nemu) and approximately 500 kg of lablab beans (urohi) were exported to the markets of London, England.
The flag-off ceremony, attended virtually by Assam’s Agriculture Minister, Atul Bora, on December 27, marked a significant milestone for the state’s farmers venturing into the international market.
Minister Bora credited the success to the robust leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting the farmers’ expanding reach into foreign markets.
“We are confident that by further increasing this trend of crop exports in the coming days, we will be able to initiate a new revolution in the agricultural economy of Assam…” he wrote on his social media handle.
The lablab beans, produced by the farmers of Dihingparia FPC in Nitaipukhuri, Sivasagar district, and the special quality lemons from Tinsukia district showcased the diverse agricultural capabilities of Assam, Minister Bora informed.
Extending congratulations to the Horticulture Department, Agriculture Department of Sivasagar district, and the Chairman of the FPC, Mantu Saikia, Minister Bora acknowledged every farmer’s contribution to this achievement.
He specifically recognized Kaushik Barua, for providing special assistance in facilitating the export of urohi from Sivasagar and kaji nemu from Tinsukia.
The unique Assam lemon, holds distinctive qualities attributed to its origin. With applications ranging from culinary to medicinal uses, this lemon variety, larger than regular lemons, boasts cluster-bearing habits that produce seedless fruits with 9-12 segments.
The feat follows a prior export achievement between December 2020 and January 2021, where nearly 6 metric tons of this lemon variety were exported to European markets.
