GUWAHATI: An explosion near the Lichubari Military Camp in Assam’s Jorhat district has left the region on edge on Thursday.

Reportedly, two individuals on motorcycles hurled a grenade at the Army camp, creating chaos and panic among the people.

As a precautionary measure, the main gate of the Lichubari Military Camp was promptly closed.

Top police officials rushed to the spot and there has been no reports of any casualties or injuries from the site.

The blast followed closely on the heels of recent grenade attacks in Tinsukia and Sivasagar districts by the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) on November 22 and December 9, respectively.

The first of the two blasts took place outside the gates of an Army camp at Dirak in Tinsukia, while the second attack happened near the 149 CRPF at Joysagar in Sivasagar district.

In a press communique released on December 10, the banned outfit had claimed responsibility for two grenade blasts.

In the statement, the banned militant outfit had also accused Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh of “arrogance” and declared that the recent grenade attacks are a direct response to his demeanour.

They cautioned that unless DGP Singh alters his conduct and ceases treating the Assam Police as his “ancestral property,” similar attacks will continue.

Meanwhile, an investigation is in progress to identify those responsible for the recent explosion and to evaluate its broader implications on the security of the state.

Authorities are expected to enhance security measures across the state in response to these incidents.
