SHILLONG: Tura in West Garo Hills is all set to host the upcoming Meghalaya Games from January 15 to 20 with fervour as the government allocated a substantial budget of Rs 23 crores to ensure a grand sporting spectacle.
Announcing the expenditure on Thursday, sports Minister Shakliar Warjri told the press that the primary objective of the event is to promote sports in the state and provide a platform for young talents to showcase their skills.
“This will help the youth a lot and I hope that in the coming years, they would represent Meghalaya more often in national and international sporting events,” said Warjri, highlighting the potential of the state’s youth in sports.
Responding to questions about development of sports infrastructure in the state ahead of the games, Warjri clarified that though no new constructions are underway, the government is revamping all the existing facilities.
He stressed that it is the government’s priority is to ensure the athletes receive the best accommodations, transportation, and other amenities.
“With 22 sporting disciplines in the lineup, the expenditure is substantial but aimed at enhancing the overall experience of participants,” he said.
Earlier on November 20, the Meghalaya State Olympic Association’s (MSOA) Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) had convened a meeting to prep for the upcoming games.
MSOA Working President and GTCC Chairman, John F Kharshiing, had presided over the meeting, which included other MSOA officials, and representatives from the 22 state sports associations.
The fifth edition of the Meghalaya Games is making its debut in Tura in West Garo Hills and as the countdown begins for the event, sports enthusiasts, athletes, and fans anticipate a celebration of talent, determination, and unity through sports.
