Hornbill Festival’s 24th edition draws to enchanting conclusion in Kohima

KOHIMA: The 24th edition of the Hornbill Festival concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony at The Heritage Village, Kisama on Sunday.

The 10-day-long cultural extravaganza brought together diverse tribes, government representatives, business figures, and artists, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Nagaland.

The closing ceremony was graced by esteemed guests, including Melinda Pavek, the US consul general in Kolkata, and Dr Andrew Fleming, the British deputy high commissioner in Kolkata.

Pavek, addressing the gathering, highlighted the significance of festivals like Hornbill in preserving the unique cultures of 17 major Naga tribes, ultimately contributing to the promotion of universal human rights.

In her speech, Pavek stressed on the importance of corresponding responsibilities, such as supporting good governance, the rule of law, and exercising freedom of expression responsibly.

She praised the event’s enrichment with the participation of representatives from three Native American communities, making it a unique cultural exchange.

Dr Andrew Fleming expressed his admiration for the Hornbill Festival, considering it one of his memorable experiences.

He immersed himself in the diverse culture and history of Nagaland, promising to return with his team for potential collaborations in sectors such as horticulture, healthcare, and education.

Fleming praised the festival’s vibrant colours and expressed hope for future collaborations in music.

Tourism and Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along delivered the vote of thanks, highlighting the festival’s role in bringing together various tribes and entities.

He urged recognition of the deeper significance rooted in folklore, themes of faithfulness, commitment, and unity.

The closing ceremony featured the lighting of the bonfire by distinguished guests, including the US consul general, the UK deputy high commissioner, and Miss Nagaland 2023 Neiketuno Sechü.

The event concluded with a symbolic “Unity Dance” and performances by noted Bollywood and Telugu music director Sandeep Chowta, Made in Nagaland, Stardust, Fatal Attraction, and Ethereal Verse.
