SHILLONG: The skies over Tura were transformed into a mesmerising canvas of colours as the Tura Kite Fest 2023 unfolded at ISBT Tura on Saturday.
Organised under the theme “Drugs-Free Garo Hills”, the event saw 29 enthusiastic participants, marking a notable contrast from the previous year’s impressive turnout of over 100 participants.
The festivities kicked off with the registration process and a meticulous scrutiny of competitors and their kites.
The solo category competition commenced at 11 am, with solo flights held in three batches.
The competition concluded at 12:30 pm, showcasing the skills of the top 15 competitors who vied for the coveted title.
After a brief intermission, the final category took centre stage, lasting for an exhilarating 45 minutes.
Ultimately, competitor Tenzy Sangma, emerged victorious, claiming the top honour in the fiercely contested competition.
In the Squad Fight category, the Doreng Squad soared to victory, while the impressive dogfighting skills of Baithy Sangma (no. 024) earned them the accolade of Best Dogfighter.
In addition to the triumphant champions, consolidation prizes were bestowed upon individuals whose exceptional contributions added to the richness of the event.
Mahendraganj MLA Sanjay Sangma and GHADC MDC and High Power Committee Chairman Rakesh Sangma graced the prize distribution ceremony, adding prestige to the event.
Balmuri K Marak, Founder of Japang NGO, took the opportunity to address the audience on the menace of drugs, urging youths to steer clear of destructive paths.
In a vibrant closing show, the Meghalaya Grassroot Music Project featured busking performances by Ricky Sangma and AMVA, providing a musical backdrop to the festivities.
