Shillong: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday led a delegation of ministers and visited the family members of the victims of the Mukroh firing incident.
The Meghalaya chief minister expressed his condolences on behalf of the state government. He also handed over the ex-gratia cheque of Rs 5 lakh to the family members of the five victims.
Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, PHE minister Renikton Lyngdoh, urban affairs minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar and social welfare minister Kyrmen Shylla were part of Conrad K Sangma’s delegation.
During the visit to Mukroh, Conrad K. Sangma stopped to interact with protesting pressure groups, including the Jaintia Students Union (JSU) and assured them that his government will ensure justice for the victims.
The Jaintia Students’ Union submitted a memorandum to the Meghalaya chief minister demanding setting up of a police outpost at Mukroh.
Sangma told the JSU leaders that the state government recently set up an outpost at Barato, which is not far from Mukroh, and will soon be functional.
The Meghalaya CM told the members of the pressure group that he would lead a delegation to meet home minister Amit Shah on Thursday in New Delhi and request the central government for a probe by a central agency – either NIA or CBI.
Assam Police on Tuesday morning opened fire at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, killing five civilians and one forest guard from Assam.
Sangma told the gathering at the village that the Meghalaya government has decided to cancel all official government functions and festivals to show solidarity with the people of Mukroh.
