Versatile actor-comedian Vir Das clinched his first International Emmy Award for his stand-up special, Vir Das: Landing, in the Best Comedy category.
The 51st International Emmy Awards Gala, held at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City, saw Das emerge victorious on a late Monday night.
This accomplishment marked Das’s second nomination, following his recognition in 2021 for the show For India in the same category.
This year, he shared the honour with the popular British teen sitcom Derry Girls: Season 3.
Taking to social media, Das shared a moment of triumph with his followers, posting a picture with the coveted Emmy trophy.
In his caption, he expressed gratitude, stating, “For India, For Indian comedy. Every breath, every word. Thank you to the @iemmys for this incredible honour.”
In an official statement shared by Netflix, Das conveyed his surreal feelings about the win.
“This moment is truly surreal – an incredible honour that feels like a dream. Winning an Emmy for Vir Das: Landing in the ‘Comedy Category’ is not just a milestone for me but for Indian comedy as a whole,” he was quoted as saying.
While Das celebrated his triumph, other Indians who graced the Emmy nominations faced stiff competition. Shefali Shah, nominated in the Best Actress category for the second season of Delhi Crime, lost to Karla Souza.
Additionally, Jim Sarbh, nominated for Best Actor for the series Rocket Boys, was edged out by Martin Freeman for The Responder.
The night also witnessed the recognition of producer Ektaa R Kapoor, co-founder of Balaji Telefilms, with the International Emmy Directorate Award.
She stands as the first Indian woman filmmaker to receive this distinguished recognition.
