Shillong: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma will lead a delegation of ministers to meet union home minister Amit Shah to demand an inquiry by either the NIA or CBI to inquiry into the incident of killing of 6 persons by Assam Police personnel at Mukroh.

An emergency cabinet meeting was held on Tuesday evening to discuss about the incident of firing by Assam Police personnel at Mukroh.

“After taking into consideration the reports submitted by the officials and input from the home minister, we have taken some important decisions,” Sangma said.

The cabinet meeting decided that a delegation led by chief minister Conrad K Sangma will visit Mukroh on Wednesday, and will meet the family members of the people who were killed in the Assam Police shootout.

Chief minister Sangma will hand over the cheque of ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

The delegation of ministers will meet representatives of different churches and NGOs, and assure them that the government of Meghalaya is initiating steps to punish the culprits.

Sangma said he would lead a delegation of ministers to meet union home minister Amit Shah on November 24, and would demand an inquiry either by the NIA or CBI to investigate the case of firing by Assam Police personnel.

At New Delhi, the Meghalaya government will register a complaint at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the issue of killing of six people by Assam Police personnel.

The cabinet meeting decided to institute an SIT, headed by the deputy inspector-general (Eastern Range) to inquire into the incident of police firing. it also decided to order for a judicial probe into the incident.

The chief minister said he had a telephonic conversation with his Assam counterpart on the incident of killing of six innocent people.

“The chief minister of Assam informed that the superintendent of police of West Karbi Anglong has been transferred, while the range officer and the officer-in-charge of the local police station have been suspended,” Sangma said.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government decided to cancel all festivals and foundation stone laying ceremonies across the state till November 30 as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
