Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii, on Monday apologised to the family of a pregnant woman who died after allegedly being refused admission at a government hospital in Lunglei, and ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
The minister made the statement while speaking at the launch of the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS) 2.0 at the Assembly conference hall in Aizawl.
She described the reports surrounding the incident as deeply disturbing and said the circumstances leading to the woman’s death must be thoroughly investigated.
The victim, F. Lallawmkimi (31), died on March 12 after reportedly being turned away from Civil Hospital Lunglei when she was taken there by her family after going into sudden labour.

According to initial reports, hospital staff on duty informed the family that no beds were available and allegedly declined to admit her.
The woman later became unresponsive and was declared dead.
Expressing regret over the incident, the minister said the government would examine the lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy.
She also extended condolences to the bereaved family and assured that accountability would be fixed once the inquiry is completed.
