The Government of Meghalaya has decided to extend the tenure of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) by six months following unrest in the Garo Hills region linked to the council election process.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting held virtually on Monday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
Briefing the media after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home and District Council Affairs Prestone Tynsong said the Cabinet convened specifically to deliberate on the issue concerning the council’s tenure.
According to Tynsong, the Cabinet approved an extension of the current GHADC House for a period of six months, from April 18 to October 18, 2026, following detailed discussions on the prevailing situation.

The development comes amid political changes within the council. Earlier in the day, Albinush R. Marak stepped down as Chief Executive Member after 21 Members of District Council moved to bring a no-confidence motion against him.
Subsequently, the council elected Dhormonath Ch. Sangma as the new Chief Executive Member and formed a new executive committee later in the afternoon.
Responding to questions regarding the earlier directive that required candidates to possess a Scheduled Tribe certificate to contest the elections, Tynsong said the matter would now be handled by the newly formed executive of the council.
