Power supply was disrupted in various parts of Sikkim after a severe thunderstorm accompanied by hail on Sunday evening caused multiple 66 kV transmission lines to trip.
According to a statement from Sikkim’s power department, a conductor of the 66 kV Rorathang-Rongli transmission line snapped near the Amba area in Pakyong district, affecting power supply to Rongli and Rhenock areas.
In Gangtok district, sparks along with a loud noise were reported near Namli area in the 66 kV Marchak-Macleods transmission line, affecting supply to Nimtar, Topakhani, Singtam and the Khamdong belt.
Additionally, the 66 kV LLHP-Sichey Transmission Line could not be sustained during trial charging.
Further, in Mangan district, during trial charging of the 66 kV Perbing-Phodong transmission line, heavy sparking and noise were observed near the G.B. Pant Wildlife Sanctuary area, resulting in the disruption of supply, the power department reported.

The Power Department has deployed teams to inspect the affected lines and carry out repair work. Officials said all efforts are underway to restore normal power supply as quickly as possible.
Temporary outages may also occur in other districts, the department added. The public has been urged to cooperate during the restoration process and report any damage to power infrastructure in their areas.
The department also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and thanked residents for their patience.
