Senior United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) leader Chandan Brahma stepped down from the party on Sunday, marking a major setback to the party ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.

In his resignation letter addressed to UPPL president Pramod Boro, Brahma cited political and ethical differences with party leadership.

He wrote, “I would like to inform you that, as I am unable to take part in various party activities due to political and ethical differences, henceforth I resign from the post as well as from party membership.”

It may be motioned that Chandan Brahma represented the Sidli Assembly constituency of Kokrajhar district in the Assam Legislative Assembly from 2006 until 2021.

The departure of Chandan Brahma adds to UPPL’s woes, following the recent exits of key leaders. One of the most prominent departures from the UPPL is Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) MCLA Kampa Borgoyary, who also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the BTC Legislative Council.

UPPL Vice President Maothi Brahma Hazowary and Central Secretary Afzal Khan also tendered their resignations earlier this month.
