The Election Commission of India has announced that the Assembly elections in Assam will be held on April 9, with the results scheduled to be declared on May 4.
Ahead of the announcement, the commission recently reviewed the preparedness for conducting the elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Puducherry.
As part of the preparations, the poll body has also appointed Central Observers under the plenary powers vested in it by Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
These observers will assist the commission in ensuring that the electoral process is conducted in a free and fair manner and will supervise the management of poll-related arrangements at the field level.
