Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several healthcare projects worth Rs 2,092 crore in Assam on Sunday, marking a major boost to the state’s medical infrastructure.

Shah inaugurated the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati, constructed at a cost of Rs 675 crore. The medical college becomes Guwahati’s second and Assam’s 14th operational medical college. The facility is expected to significantly improve access to quality healthcare services for people in the region.

He also virtually inaugurated two cancer centres at Golaghat and Tinsukia. Both facilities have been developed under the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF), each with an investment of Rs 135 crore.

Additionally, Shah also virtually laid foundation stones Super speciality Hospital at Diphu Medical College and Hospital, Super speciality Hospital at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, Super speciality Hospital at Barpeta Medical College and Hospital, Abhayapuri District Hospital and Swastha Bhawan at Guwahati.

Addressing a gathering in Guwahati, Amit Shah lauded Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for bringing the state’s medical facilities at par with states like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

He said, “Assam has transformed into a major healthcare hub for the Northeastern region over the last 10 years of BJP led government reducing the need for residents to travel to outside the region for treatment. Assam is the first state in India to introduce proton therapy machine within the public health care system and has made world class cancer treatment facilities.”

He also took a jibe at the Congress and alleged that during its previous 15 years of rule in Assam, the party “pocketed” Rs 150 crore per annum from the state healthcare budget.
