Agartala: The Tripura Legislative Assembly will elect its new Speaker on March 18, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Friday.
He also informed that seven new bills will be introduced during the ongoing budget session of the Assembly.
Nath outlined the schedule for the election, stating that the Speaker-in-charge will formally announce the election on March 16.
Nomination papers can be filed on March 17, which will also include the process of scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations.
He added that if only one candidate files a nomination, the candidate will be declared elected as Speaker on March 18.
However, if more than one nomination is received, voting through a ballot will be conducted, and the process will be finalised accordingly.
Meanwhile, the name of BJP MLA Rampada Jamatia has been proposed for the post of Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday to fill the vacancy created after the death of former Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen late last year.
Jamatia, a senior tribal leader of the ruling party and MLA from the Bagma constituency in Gomati district, was chosen for the post after the passing away of former Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen.
The Speaker’s post had remained vacant since December 26, 2025, following the demise of Sen, who represented the Dharmanagar constituency and was serving as the presiding officer of the House.
Jamatia’s name for the post was proposed by the BJP legislative party during a meeting held at the official residence of Chief Minister Manik Saha ahead of the budget session of the Assembly.
On the legislative agenda, Nath said the first Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting had initially proposed three bills for the session. However, seven additional bills have now been included.
