Guwahati: The Nagaland government has formed a 13-member Inter-Departmental Coordination Committee (IDCC) on the registration of births and deaths, headed by the chief secretary, with the objective of ensuring that all such events are registered within the stipulated 21-day period.

In a notification issued on Friday, the state’s Economics and Statistics Department stated that the committee has been constituted under the provisions of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.

The move also follows directions from the Office of the Registrar General of India to strengthen inter-departmental coordination for the effective implementation of the Civil Registration System (CRS).

The committee will work to enhance coordination among key departments, including health, police, revenue, education, and local bodies such as municipalities and village councils, to streamline the implementation of the CRS.

As part of its mandate, the IDCC will organise periodic training sessions and workshops for CRS personnel such as registrars, sub-registrars, and notifiers, including ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), to improve their understanding of duties and procedures.

The panel will also focus on spreading awareness about the significance of timely registration of births and deaths, highlighting its importance for legal, administrative, and educational purposes.

According to the notification, the committee is required to meet at least once every year to assess the progress made towards achieving registration targets and to discuss ways to address challenges encountered by officials involved in the registration process.

In addition, the IDCC will frame policy guidelines related to the registration system and recommend corrective measures aimed at improving the overall performance of officials engaged in registration activities.
