Police in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district have registered a case against a police personnel after live ammunition and uniform items were recovered from the premises of a mosque in Williamnagar, officials said on Friday.
According to the district police, a group of residents informed authorities on Friday morning about camouflage clothing and live rounds of ammunition found inside the Williamnagar mosque compound.
Following the report, police conducted an enquiry and found that a personnel from the East Garo Hills District Executive Force (DEF) had been staying in rented accommodation within the mosque compound.
The officer, who is currently on sanctioned leave, had reportedly left behind personal belongings at the location.
During the inspection, police recovered several items including police uniforms bearing a name plate, a belt, boots, camouflage uniforms, an ammunition pouch and four live rounds of ammunition.

Officials said keeping ammunition at a private location instead of depositing it in the designated armoury during a leave period is unauthorised.
The recovered ammunition has been seized and a case has been registered at Williamnagar Police Station under Section 25(1-A) of the Arms Act.
East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police S. A. Rynjah said legal action would be initiated against the personnel concerned.
Police have also urged the public not to circulate false or misleading information related to the incident on social media, warning that strict legal action would be taken against those found spreading misinformation with malicious intent.
