Aizawl: At least 16 people lost their lives and hundreds of homes were damaged in various natural disasters across Mizoram over the past year, the state government informed the Assembly on Thursday.
Responding to a query from K Laldawngliana of the Mizo National Front, State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma said that natural calamities including landslides, heavy rain and cyclones resulted in 16 fatalities during the period under review.

The minister stated in a written reply that the government has provided ex gratia assistance of Rs. 4 lakh each to the families of those who died in the disasters.
Apart from the loss of life, the disasters also caused extensive damage to property.
According to the minister, a total of 581 houses were affected during the year due to landslides and other weather-related incidents.
Families whose homes were damaged have received financial assistance from the government, with compensation ranging between Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 1.3 lakh depending on the type of house and the extent of damage, Lalnilawma added.
