Shillong: Authorities in West Garo Hills district have extended the curfew across the district as tensions continue following recent incidents of violence and disturbance of public order.
The order was issued by District Magistrate Vibhor Agarwal under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
Officials said the decision was taken after reviewing reports from law enforcement agencies which indicated that strict preventive measures were still required to restore normalcy and prevent further escalation of violence.
According to the order, the curfew will remain in force from 12 am on March 13 until 6 am on March 14, unless lifted earlier by the district administration.
During this period, residents will not be allowed to move outside their homes within the district.
However, the administration has announced a temporary relaxation in the curfew from 9 am to 1 pm on March 13 to allow residents to purchase essential commodities such as food items and medicines.

All educational institutions, banks, markets, shops, offices and commercial establishments across the district will remain closed during the curfew period.
Only establishments providing essential services, including hospitals, pharmacies, emergency services and utilities, will be allowed to operate.
The district administration has directed law enforcement agencies, executive magistrates and police officials to strictly enforce the order.
Authorities warned that any violation of the curfew will invite penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other applicable laws.
Officials said the order was issued on March 12 considering the emergent nature of the situation and the potential threat to public safety in the district.
