Meta has rolled out a long-awaited feature for Threads, its standalone messaging app.
Users can now delete or deactivate their Threads account without affecting their linked Instagram profile.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri made the announcement, addressing a persistent user request.
The latest version of the Threads app introduces a straightforward process for account management.
Under the “Settings” menu, users can find the “Account” option, where two choices await them – “Delete” and “Deactivate Profile”.
Opting for the temporary deactivation will archive all data, providing users the flexibility to return to the platform at a later time.
On the other hand, selecting “Delete Profile” is a permanent action, with the content, likes, and followers being hidden for 30 days before complete deletion.
Importantly, neither option impacts the linked Instagram profile.
This development comes in response to user feedback and addresses a long-standing concern.
Many users desired the ability to sever ties with Threads without having to deactivate or delete their Instagram account, and Meta has now fulfilled this request.
Meta’s Chief Privacy Officer for Product, Michel Protti, had confirmed in September that the company was actively working on this feature.
The integration of Threads and Instagram credentials initially posed a challenge for users who wanted to discontinue Threads without compromising their Instagram presence.
With this update, Meta provides users with more autonomy and control over their accounts on both platforms.
In another user-friendly move, Threads now allows users to opt out of having their posts displayed on Instagram and Facebook.
This optional feature, which started rolling out globally, gives users greater control over the visibility of their content across Meta-owned platforms.
The introduction of these features reflects Meta’s commitment to enhancing user experience and addressing user concerns on its social media platforms.
