Guwahati: The Assam government has decided to raise the daily wages of tea garden workers in the state by Rs 30, with the revised rates set to come into effect from April 1, according to an official notification.

The wage revision will apply to workers employed in both estate tea gardens and small tea gardens across Assam, which is the largest tea-producing state in the country.

“Consequent upon the recommendation of Minimum Wages Advisory Board for tea plantation workers of Assam in its meeting on 26.2.2026, Governor of Assam is pleased to allow an interim increase of Rs 30 in the interim minimum wages of the tea plantation workers with effect from 1.4.2026,” the notification issued on March 7 said.

With the revised rates, tea garden workers in the Brahmaputra Valley will receive Rs 280 per day, up from the existing Rs 250. In the Barak Valley, the daily wage will rise from Rs 228 to Rs 258.

The notification further clarified that the wage hike will also be applicable to workers employed in small tea gardens in both the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys.

The last revision in the daily wages of tea garden labourers in the state took place in October 2023, when the wages were increased by Rs 18.

The state Cabinet approved the latest hike on February 26 after a tripartite meeting involving the state government, tea garden labour unions and tea garden owners to discuss the wage revision.

Following the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the wages may be revised again in the coming months as the new Labour Codes introduced by the Centre are implemented.

He also indicated that stakeholders may need to hold further discussions within the next six months and that the final daily wage for tea garden workers could eventually exceed Rs 300.
