The Mizoram Assembly is scheduled to take up an official resolution on Monday urging the Centre to grant national recognition to the Mizo language and include it in the 8th schedule of the Constitution, according to officials from the assembly secretariat.
The resolution will be moved by School Education Minister Vanlalthlana after the question hour during the Assembly session.
The move aims to intensify efforts to secure constitutional status for the Mizo language, which is the “lingua franca” of various Mizo tribes. At present, the 8th Schedule of the constitution recognizes 22 languages.
The proposed resolution follows the recent consultations between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and the Eighth Schedule Study Group of the Mizo Language Development Board (MLDB).

Earlier this year, in January, representatives of the study group informed the Chief Minister that there is strong support among different organisations and ethnic Mizo communities across the state for the inclusion of the language in the constitutional list.
They said that a proposal for inclusion of the Mizo language in the 8th Schedule was submitted to the Centre in the past, but was not vigorously pursued.
To move the process, the study group has recommended the formation of a task group to resubmit the proposal comprehensively.
