Guwahati: Marking International Women’s Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that nearly 40 lakh beneficiaries of the state’s flagship Orunodoi Scheme will receive Rs. 9,000 each next week.

The payment, scheduled for March 10 at 10.30 am, will include four months of pending installments along with an additional grant for the upcoming Bohag Bihu celebrations.

The chief minister said the transfer would amount to Rs. 3,600 crore being credited to beneficiaries’ bank accounts in a single day, describing it as the largest one-day transfer under a government scheme in the state.

Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Sarma said that nearly 40 lakh Orunodoi families across Assam will receive the consolidated payment.

He also informed that meetings will be organised at the local level across the state on the same day, inviting beneficiary families to participate and interact with officials.

The Orunodoi scheme, one of the government’s key poverty alleviation initiatives, provides monthly financial assistance of Rs. 1,250 to eligible women to support household expenses.

The announcement comes as Assam prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections, where the BJP-led government will seek a third consecutive term.

Highlighting his government’s focus on women’s empowerment, Sarma said initiatives in areas such as financial security, education, healthcare and entrepreneurship have helped lakhs of women across the state gain greater confidence and independence.

In posts on social media platform X, the chief minister said empowering women has been central to Assam’s development journey and praised the strength and contribution of the state’s “Nari Shakti”.

Celebrating the occasion, the CMO said the achievements reflect the growing role of women in shaping the state’s future and contributing to the vision of a developed Assam.
