Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday laid the foundation stones for a mini stadium and the renovation of the Mangsang Primary Health Centre during a programme held at Mangsang in East Garo Hills.
The mini stadium project, which will be implemented by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, aims to improve sports infrastructure in the area and create better opportunities for young people to engage in training and sporting activities.
An amount of Rs. 4.73 crore has been sanctioned for the project, which will upgrade an existing facility originally constructed by late leader P. A. Sangma.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister recalled his long association with the area and the connection the late P. A. Sangma had with Mangsang and its people.

He said the occasion was particularly meaningful as the foundation stone for the stadium’s upgradation was laid on the 10th death anniversary of the former Lok Sabha Speaker.
Sangma also spoke about ongoing efforts to document and preserve the legacy of P. A. Sangma so that future generations can draw inspiration from his life and contributions.
He mentioned that a museum dedicated to the late leader has already been inaugurated, while a book and a film on his life are currently being prepared.
On the same occasion, the chief minister laid the foundation stone for the renovation and expansion of the Mangsang PHC, a project sanctioned at Rs. 2.98 crore.
The work will include refurbishment of the main building, construction of staff quarters, an additional GNM quarter and a yoga-cum-meeting hall.
The project is expected to enhance healthcare services and provide improved facilities for both medical personnel and residents of surrounding villages.
Highlighting the importance of strengthening health services at the grassroots level, Sangma said improving healthcare infrastructure continues to remain a key priority for the government.
The chief minister also announced several other development initiatives for the region.
Responding to concerns raised by local leaders, he said fire and emergency services for the area would soon be operational.
He also assured that the proposal for the creation of a new administrative block would be examined by the government.

Regarding road connectivity, Sangma said work on the second phase of the Mangsang–Adokgre Road is expected to begin soon.
He added that the proposed Mangsang–Riangdo Road, which could provide an important route linking the region to Shillong and Guwahati, is currently under survey.
Encouraging young people to take advantage of government programmes, the chief minister urged them to actively participate in schemes designed to create employment opportunities and support entrepreneurship.
He also called on citizens, particularly the youth, to maintain cleanliness in their communities.
The programme was attended by Jim M. Sangma, along with government officials and members of the local community.
The initiatives form part of the government’s efforts to strengthen infrastructure and promote balanced development across the state.
