Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday distributed appointment letters to 2,968 newly recruited personnel of the Meghalaya Police at a programme held at the 2nd MLP Battalion in Goeragre, marking one of the largest recruitment drives in the state’s police force.
The recruitment covers 2,968 vacancies across several technical and service-oriented posts in the department.
Of these, 1,494 positions are for Armed Branch Constables and related roles, while 720 posts are for Unarmed Branch Constables.
Other appointments include 205 MPRO Operators and 195 Firemen, along with specialised roles such as UBSI, Driver Fireman, Driver Constable, and various operator and mechanic posts.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma described the event as a historic occasion for the state.
He said the mass distribution of appointment letters was among the largest the state had witnessed and reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening the police force.
The chief minister noted that the recruitment process had attracted more than 1.7 lakh applicants, making it one of the most competitive exercises undertaken by the department.
Congratulating the Central Recruitment Board and the Home (Police) Department, he said the successful completion of the process was a major achievement for the authorities involved.
Sangma emphasised the crucial role played by the police in maintaining law and order, which he said is essential for development and governance.
He told the new recruits that their appointment marked the beginning of a lifelong responsibility to ensure peace, stability and security in the state.
Highlighting the significance of the police uniform, he urged the recruits to uphold discipline, fairness and justice in their service.
The chief minister also called on them to remain adaptable and committed to learning, while balancing firmness in enforcing the law with humility when dealing with the public.
Sangma further informed that the present government would complete eight years in office the following day, during which nearly 11,000 appointments and recruitments have been made across various departments.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to filling other vacancies in the near future.
He also acknowledged the leadership of Idashisha Nongrang and the Home (Police) Department for their efforts in strengthening policing in the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also addressed the programme, congratulated the recruits and highlighted the transparency of the recruitment process.
He said the selected candidates had secured their positions purely on merit and hard work.

Tynsong urged the recruits to dedicate themselves fully to their training and service, reminding them of their duty to serve the people of Meghalaya with sincerity and humility.
He also assured aspiring candidates that future recruitment drives would continue to follow a fair and merit-based process.
Earlier, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang welcomed the dignitaries, senior officials and the newly recruited personnel along with their families.
The programme began with the arrival of the chief minister and a ceremonial salute, followed by the formal distribution of appointment letters in the presence of senior government and police officials.
Members of the Central Recruitment Board were felicitated during the event.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Senior Superintendent of Police (TAP) Rituraj Ravi, followed by the playing of the state anthem.
