Guwahati: Three candidates backed by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Thursday filed their nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Assam, officials said.
The nominees are BJP leaders Jogen Mohan and Terash Gowala, along with United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro.
With opposition parties yet to field any candidate due to inadequate numbers in the state assembly, the three NDA nominees are expected to be elected unopposed.
The candidates submitted their nomination papers in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The elections are being held for three seats in the Rajya Sabha from Assam. The terms of the current members — Bhubaneswar Kalita, Rameswar Teli and opposition-backed Independent Ajit Kumar Bhuyan — are set to end on April 9.
Jogen Mohan, the MLA from the Mahmora Assembly constituency, is currently serving as Assam’s minister for Transport, Hill Areas Development, and Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture.
Terash Gowala, who represents the Duliajan constituency, arrived at the Assembly complex on a bicycle to submit his nomination papers.
Pramod Boro, the former chief executive member of the Bodoland Territorial Council, will become the UPPL’s second representative in the Rajya Sabha if elected.
