Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated the Saraighat Rana Smritisaudh, a war memorial dedicated to the historic Battle of Saraighat, at Panbazar on the banks of the Brahmaputra River.

The memorial pays tribute to 132 warriors who laid down their lives defending Assam from Mughal forces in the 17th century.

Designed in the traditional Ahom architectural style, the structure features the engraved names of the fallen heroes and seeks to preserve the memory of one of the region’s most significant historical conflicts.

Officials said the memorial has been conceived not only as a tribute to the bravery displayed during the battle but also as a centre of learning for researchers, students and history enthusiasts interested in exploring Assam’s rich historical legacy.

Addressing the gathering after the inauguration, CM Sarma said the monument symbolises the state’s profound respect for its past and the sacrifices made by its people to protect Assam’s sovereignty.

He stressed that preserving such historical landmarks is essential for strengthening awareness about the region’s heritage among younger generations.

The Battle of Saraighat, fought in 1671 under the leadership of Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan, is widely considered a defining moment in Assam’s history and a powerful example of resistance against Mughal expansion.

During the same programme, the chief minister also laid the foundation stone for the third phase of the Brahmaputra riverfront development project, which includes the expansion of the riverfront park.

Once completed, the initiative is expected to turn the stretch into a prominent recreational destination for both residents and visitors.

Located on nearly 2.5 acres within the premises of the old Deputy Commissioner’s office, the memorial along with the proposed riverfront expansion is expected to further boost heritage tourism in the area.
