Pawan Chamling calls for revival of Sikkim Democratic Front on party’s 34th Foundation Day

Gangtok: Former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling on Wednesday called on party members to unite and work towards reviving the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), urging them to restore it as a formidable political force in the state.

Speaking at the party’s 34th foundation day programme, Chamling appealed to workers and supporters to come together in rebuilding the organisation. “Let us unite to strengthen the SDF and ensure it once again emerges as a strong political force in Sikkim,” he said.

The SDF, which governed Sikkim uninterrupted for 25 years from 1994 under Chamling’s leadership, currently has no representation in the state Assembly following the 2024 elections. In recent months, several former MLAs and MPs have left the party to join the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).

Targeting the government led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Chamling alleged that it had failed to deliver on multiple fronts. He asserted that only the SDF could re-establish a governance system centred on security and development for the people of Sikkim.

The 75-year-old leader further maintained that the SDF had consistently safeguarded the rights of the Sikkimese people under Article 371(F) of the Constitution, which provides special provisions for the state.

A large number of party workers and supporters assembled at the SDF headquarters for the event, raising slogans in support of Chamling and reiterating their commitment to the party’s revival.
