Guwahati: The strength of the Executive Council of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) has been increased from 14 to 17 members after receiving approval from the Governor of Assam, according to an official notification.

The expansion follows a proposal submitted by BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary. The approval was conveyed through a communication issued by the Governor’s Secretariat on March 3.

Three Members of Council Legislative Assembly (MCLAs) have been inducted as Executive Members — Maheswar Basumatary from the Goreswar ST constituency, Lakhi Das from the Nagrijuli non-ST constituency, and government-nominated member Karmeshwar Roy. With their inclusion, the total number of Executive Members has risen to 17.

The Governor has also cleared the administration of the oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed members, which will take place on March 6 or 7 at Kokrajhar.

Mukesh Ch. Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam and officer in charge of Principal Secretary to the BTC, has been authorised to administer the oath.

The official communication, issued by Bidit Das, Additional Secretary to the Government of Assam, has been sent to the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, the Chief Minister’s Office and the Bodoland Welfare Department for necessary follow-up action.

The expansion of the Executive Council is being viewed as an important administrative step by the Hagrama Mohilary-led BTC, aimed at strengthening its executive framework ahead of upcoming governance initiatives in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
