Shillong: North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) registrar-in-charge Kailash Chandra Biswal was injured after unidentified assailants pelted stones at his vehicle in Shillong, police said on Wednesday.
The attack occurred on Monday evening when Biswal was on his way out of the university campus.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, around five masked individuals carried out the assault near the Mawlai Bypass.
Syiem said that as the vehicle reached the bypass area, the group suddenly began hurling stones, one of which struck Biswal on the head. The assailants fled towards a nearby forest after residents and shopkeepers rushed to the spot on hearing the disturbance.
Biswal was immediately shifted to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) for treatment. Doctors recommended hospitalisation, and he is currently admitted to the neurology department for further care, the SP said.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack.
Biswal was recently appointed registrar-in-charge of the Shillong campus by NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla.
